Which surfaces work, which don’t, and how to get a lasting bond. Everything you need to apply your UV-DTF stickers & decals like a pro.
Check Your SurfaceUV-DTF decals are prized for their durability, vibrant colour, and ability to wrap around curved and textured surfaces. But not every material is a natural fit. The adhesive is aggressive and permanent, yet it still needs the right kind of surface to grip. Before diving into materials, here are the two things a UV-DTF decal needs to bond well:
The adhesive grips best against a solid, closed surface. Porous or absorbent materials wick away the bond or trap air, causing lifting and peeling.
Oils, dust, silicone residue, mould-release agents, and dishwasher rinse aids all sabotage adhesion. A quick wipe with isopropyl alcohol (IPA, 70%+) before application solves most bonding problems on otherwise-suitable surfaces.
…a UV-DTF decal will almost always stick beautifully. The problems start when a surface is porous, flexible, powdery, oily, or coated in something the adhesive can’t grip.

These are the ideal substrates — no special prep needed. Clean them with isopropyl alcohol, let dry, and apply.
The gold standard for UV-DTF. Drinkware, jars, vases, candle holders, windows, and mirrors all work superbly. The smooth, non-porous surface gives a flawless bond, and the decal’s clarity shows off well on transparent glass. Always de-grease with IPA first — glass often carries invisible oils from handling.
Mugs, plates, tiles, and pots with a glossy glazed finish behave just like glass. Excellent adhesion and a clean finish.
Tumblers, flasks, water bottles, tins, and signage bond extremely well. Powder-coated finishes (common on premium tumblers) are particularly good because they’re smooth and sealed.
Acrylic blanks, keyrings, phone cases (hard PET / ABS / polycarbonate), and display stands are reliable substrates.
Resin tumblers, epoxy river tables, and coated crafts take UV-DTF well once fully cured. Applying to under-cured epoxy risks a soft, tacky surface that traps the decal poorly and can cloud over time.
Polished marble, granite, glazed tile, and factory-sealed stone coasters bond well thanks to their smooth, closed surface. Clean with IPA first.
Wood is one of the most requested substrates — and one of the most misunderstood. The key issue is porosity. Raw wood grain is full of tiny open pores that trap air and starve the adhesive, causing edges to lift within days.
Wood that already has a smooth, sealed finish — polyurethane, lacquer, varnish, or a factory melamine coating — behaves like a hard plastic and bonds well. Just make sure any recent finish is fully cured (not just dry to the touch) before applying.
Open grain traps air and starves the adhesive. Apply only after preparing the surface with the four steps below.
Start around 220 grit and finish with 320+ to knock down the grain and any fuzz.
Use a tack cloth or a slightly damp lint-free cloth, then let the surface dry completely.
2–3 light coats of clear spray paint, polyurethane, or lacquer. This closes the pores and creates the smooth, non-porous film the adhesive needs.
Check the can, but usually 24 hours minimum. Give it one final light scuff and clean before applying the decal.
It all comes down to whether the surface is sealed or porous.

Untreated slate, natural stone, terracotta, and concrete are porous and often dusty. Seal them first with a clear stone sealer or clearcoat spray, let it cure, then apply. Without sealing, the powdery surface layer will pull away with the decal.

Regardless of substrate, these seven steps produce the best results every time.
Wipe the surface with 70%+ isopropyl alcohol and let it dry fully. Skip household sprays — many leave a residue that blocks adhesion.
Cold surfaces and cold decals bond poorly. Aim for roughly 18–25 °C.
UV-DTF is unforgiving once down. Line it up on a curved or shaped item before committing.
Rub the decal down hard through the top film with a squeegee, credit card, or firm cloth, working from the centre outward to push out air.
Peel at a shallow angle. If any part of the design lifts with the film, lay it back down and burnish that area again.
Once the carrier is off, give the design a last firm rub-down.
Adhesion strengthens over the first 24–48 hours. Avoid washing, scrubbing, or heavy handling during this window.
The safest test is simple: is the surface smooth, sealed, clean, and rigid? If yes, you’re almost certainly good to go after an alcohol wipe. If it’s porous, powdery, flexible, waxy, or oily, it needs prep first — or a different substrate.
