Textile DTF Application & Artwork Guide

Everything you need for perfect Textile DTF transfers — how to prepare artwork that prints and lasts, the file types & resolution our gang sheet builder needs, and exactly how to heat-press your transfers onto fabric.

The Basics

What Textile DTF Is Best For

Textile DTF is a heat-transfer print applied to fabric with a heat press. It gives vibrant colour, a soft feel, and excellent wash durability — ideal for apparel and custom clothing. It bonds to fabric fibres, so it's a very different product from UV-DTF (which is for hard, rigid surfaces).

👕

Great for fabric & apparel

T-shirts, hoodies, sweaters, caps, tote bags, aprons and more — cotton, polyester, and poly/cotton blends all work beautifully. Perfect for clothing brands and custom apparel.

⚠️

Not for hard or rigid items

Textile DTF needs a heat press and fabric to bond to. It is not for glass, metal, tumblers, wood, or other hard surfaces.

Making stickers or decals for mugs, tumblers, glass or other hard surfaces instead? Those need our UV-DTF product — see the UV-DTF Application Guide.

Artwork Requirements

Textile DTF lays down a solid white underbase and then your colours on top. That's what makes it pop on dark garments — but it also means your artwork needs clean, defined edges. Here's what works and what to avoid.

Works well
  • Bold, solid shapes and fills with strong colour.
  • Clean, hard edges — crisp outlines print sharpest.
  • Lines and strokes at least 1 mm thick.
  • High-resolution art at 300 DPI or more at the final print size.
  • A fully transparent background (PNG) — only the design prints.
  • Readable text — keep it around 4–5 mm tall or larger, and favour simple, bold fonts.
Avoid
  • Semi-transparent pixels around the edges — soft feathered edges, outer glows, drop shadows, and gradients that fade to transparent.
  • Hairline strokes and lines thinner than 1 mm — they won't hold or adhere reliably.
  • Tiny intricate detail and very small text.
  • Low-resolution or upscaled images (below 300 DPI) — they print blurry or pixelated.
  • A solid (non-transparent) background — it will print as a rectangle around your design.
The transparency rule: your background must be transparent — but the edges of the design itself must be fully opaque. Because Textile DTF prints a solid white underbase beneath your colours, partly-transparent (semi-transparent) pixels can't be reproduced — they show up as rough, jagged edges or a faint white halo. Flatten soft edges, glows, drop shadows and feathering to clean, hard edges before you upload.

The quick rule of thumb — your artwork should be:

Files & Resolution

File Types, Resolution & DPI

Our gang sheet builder accepts several file types, but a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background gives the best, cleanest result.

📄

Supported File Types

The gang sheet builder accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG, SVG, WEBP and PDF, and you can upload multiple files at once.

Best choice: a PNG with a transparent background — JPGs can't be transparent and will bring a solid background with them.
📈

Resolution & DPI

Aim for 300 DPI at the final print size. Enlarging a small or low-res image on the canvas drops its effective DPI and it will print soft or pixelated.

Tip: design at, or scan/export at, the size you'll actually print — don't stretch a tiny logo up to fill an A3.
🌐

Live Quality Meter

As you resize art on the sheet, the builder shows its effective DPI and a coloured border so you know instantly if a piece is print-ready.

Green means you're good to go.
Effective DPI (in the builder) Quality What it means
300 DPI or moreGreenIdeal — crisp, sharp print.
200–299 DPIYellowAcceptable for most art; fine detail may soften.
150–199 DPIOrangeRisky — noticeably soft. Use a larger/higher-res file if you can.
Below 150 DPIRedToo low — will look blurry or pixelated in print.

Step by Step

Pressing Instructions

Textile DTF transfers are applied with a heat press. Follow these steps for a vibrant print that survives the wash. Our transfers are cold peel.

  1. 1

    Pre-Press the Garment

Press the blank garment on its own for about 5 seconds to flatten it and drive out moisture. A dry, smooth surface bonds far better.

  2. 2

    Position the Transfer

Place the transfer print-side down where you want it. Measure or use a guide for straight, centred placement.

  3. 3

    Cover It

Lay a sheet of parchment or a PTFE/Teflon sheet over the transfer to protect it and the platen.

  4. 4

    Press

160 °C / 320 °F, firm pressure, for 12–15 seconds. Times and temperatures can vary slightly with your press and fabric — always test first.

  5. 5

    Cold Peel

Let the transfer cool completely, then peel the carrier film away in one slow, smooth motion. If any of the design lifts, lay it back down, re-press briefly and let it cool again before peeling.

  6. 6

    Second Press to Finish

Cover with parchment or an old t-shirt and press again for 5–10 seconds. This embeds the print into the fabric for a softer feel and better wash durability.

Quick reference: 160 °C / 320 °F  ·  firm pressure  ·  12–15 s  ·  cold peel  ·  then a 5–10 s second press.
Always do a test press first on a scrap piece of the same fabric. Heat presses run differently, and a 30-second test can save a whole garment.
